Hi There,

Are there examples of MSI deployment (scope).
What can we input in the options in the arguments?(examples?)
Can we input any switches? (is it different from running from msiexec from cmd)
Can we generate log when deploy the MSI? ( in msiexec /l*)

Please advise. Thanks.

We currently do not have a tutorial for Software Installation.

To install a Software Product via a Scope Action, it is fairly straightforward:

  1. First use the Administration & Diagnostic > Software Product > Add New Program > Add / Remove Installation Package

    and configure the MSI or EXE software package you wish to install on your machines.

    See: Managing Software Products

  2. Once you have configured your software products in the Administration & Diagnostic feature, they can be installed via a Scope Action.

    In the Action Module configuration of the Scope Action, select:
    Add / Remove > Execute Computer Action > Software Product > Install Software Package .

    Click on the [...] button of the Software Package parameter and select the Software Package to install.

Configuring an MSI Package

The Options field of the MSI configuration accepts parameters in the format:
Name='Value'. This field doesn't accept msiexe.exe command line parameters like the /l or /quiet.

Supposedly, any MSI Public Property can be configured here. See Windows Installer Property Reference

However, after testing a couple of them, it seems that most of them have no effect (!?!).

I have particularly tested the:
LOGACTION='ALL'
MsiLogFileLocation='log_file_path'
MsiLogging='Lwearucmopv'

to see if I could force the generation of a log file. However every attempt failed (the package gets installed but the log file isn't generated). Some of these properties have MSI Engine dependencies (for installed the MsiLogging requires the Windows Installer v5). But even when I executed it on a Windows 7 machine, I didn't see a log file...

Some other properties do work however. For instance:
REBOOT='ReallySuppress'

If you really need to use advanced MSI options, you might need to do it via the Run As action.

Place the MSI package file under a network resouce, and use the Scope Action > Execute Computer Action > Processes > Start a new process
  • Set the Process Name to: msiexec.exe
  • Set the Argument String to: /i \\Server\ShareName\Path\MSIName.msi /quiet /qn /norestart /L*V "C:\MSI_Install.log"
  • Set the Run as Type to: 2 (specified user)
  • Enter the Run As User Name and Password.

For instance:
Example

This method will accept any options.

REBOOT='ReallySuppress' still caused system reboot for me.

REBOOT=ReallySuppress stopped reboot from occurring.

What is
Goverlan SureData Technology
Technology?

SUREDATA is a Real-Time & Database-Driven Query Engine that guarantees the most complete and accurate view of your environment.

System management solutions that are database-driven ensure data availability but may not be current. Real-time solutions are responsive and current but they can’t handle offline devices.

With GOVERLAN’s SURE-DATA Technology you don’t have to trade off accuracy for availability - the data is directly queried from the system in real-time, then registered into a database back-end. If a system is offline, GOVERLAN automatically pulls the information from the database.

SURE-DATA gives you the best of both worlds - accuracy and availability of information on every machine, online or offline.
